In medical circles Dr Meares was best known for his formulation of the atavistic theory of hypnosis. He has worked in psychotherapy with the paintings of schizophrenic patients and invented the exploratory technique of hypnoplasty. He has experimented in the psychological control of pain to the extent of having his teeth extracted without discomfort, and he has worked extensively with meditation in the treatment of psychoneurotic and psychosomatic illness. He traveled widely, gaining first hand experience with Eastern mystics, hence the zen style of this present volume.
