Sandra Maitri was in the first groups taught the enneagram by Claudio Naranjo in the early 1970's. Consistently, Claudio Naranjo and A.H. Almaas, who was also among Naranjo's early pupils and is now Sandra Maitri's teacher, have maintained that the Enneagram as presented by Oscar Ichazo is meant to serve in-depth practical personal study. In her introduction Ms. Maitri explains her intent by writing, "The current popularization of the Enneagram has focused almost exclusively on the psychological traits and patterns of the types … all of this interest has ideally created an audience that may be receptive to its other dimensions as well. The enneagram's deeper function is to point the way to who we are beyond the level of the personality, a dimension of ourselves that is infinitely more profound, more interesting, more rewarding, and more real. It is in support of that pursuit that this book is written." In her presentation Ms. Maitri refers several times to Gurdjieff's concepts related to the enneagram and also describes her early studies with Claudio Naranjo as being very Gurdjieffian in design.
