1977. Written and composed by de Hartmann during the Nazi occupation of Paris. After the Nazi's commandeered the de Hartmann's house, they found another run-down abandoned dwelling. In the filth de Hartmann came upon a copy of Racine's Esther, read it, and concluded that fate was directing him to write an opera based on the Biblical story.
