Known mostly for his collaboration with Gurdjieff, Thomas de Hartmann was also an accomplished composer in his own right. He studied composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Anton Arensky and Sergei Taneyev, was quite famous in Russia at the turn of the Twentieth Century and collaborated with Wasily Kaminski in Munich before meeting Gurdjieff. He continued composing during and after his time with Gurdjieff and his work was frequently performed in France in the 1940's. However, his classical oeuvre is mostly forgotten since the 1940's. Most of the music included here has not been recorded before and none of it has been available since the 50's. Included are sonatas for piano, violin, and cello; vocal works; a concerto for double bass; a trio for flute, violin and piano; saxophone and vocal quartets, and many other selections.
